The bay of Castiglioncello and Cala de’ Medici

The village of Castiglioncello dominates the top of a small promontory just a short distance from the Residence Rosa dei Venti. From the top of its position, the village enjoys a marvelous view of its bay and the Tuscan coast. Castiglioncello is a very popular seaside destination and often frequented by famous people. The reputation of the promontory and its beaches began in the 800’s because it was chosen as a holiday resort by writers, artists and show business figures. The coast of Castiglioncello is very indented, along the coast alternate small sandy or pebble beaches, cliffs and rocks perfect for tanning. The sea is crystal clear and calm, ideal for water sports such as sailing and windsurfing since the coast is affected by light but constant winds.
A short distance from the Bay of Castiglioncello is Cala de’ Medici, one of the most advanced marinas on the Tuscan coast. It has over 600 berths, a yacht club and numerous other services. Given its strategic position, in the heart of the Etruscan Coast, it is here that dock many of the boats that sail between Castiglioncello, Livorno and the islands of the Tuscan Archipelago. Cala de’ Medici is in fact the starting point for numerous excursions to the islands, in particular Gorgona, Capraia and Elba which are the closest.
